Can't wait to read more of this series!" -Louisa, Words I Write Crazy It was an absolute joy to be reacquainted with the quartet of retirees, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim as they as they paw over cold case files before finding themselves embroiled in a real-life MI5 scandal. This book, which sold 114,202 copies in the first week, picks up right where The Thursday Murder Club left off. Can The Thursday Murder Club find the killer (and the diamonds) before the killer finds them?” And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus? But this time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. “As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster, and a very real threat to his life. He’s made a big mistake, and he needs her help. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. The blurb reads: “ It’s the following Thursday. Pointless host Richard Osman’s second novel in the hilarious record breaking series, The Man Who Died Twice, is every bit as brilliantly bonkers as the first – if not even more so. The Thursday Murder Club series is like a slice of Victoria Sponge – quintessentially British, jam packed and that feeling that you don’t want it to end. It sounded fluffy, and the cover was so cute yet so cheesy, that I never felt motivated enough to add it to my pile when book buying. “How many times can our emotions be tied to someone else’s – be pulled and stretched and twisted – before they snap? The writer does not tell you what to think, but let you make decisions and conclusions independently. Monster is interesting to read because it provides the reader with a chance to create his/her own impression about the main character. Why did Walter Dean Myers write monster in the format of a screenplay? It may be assumed that, by doing so, he wanted to show the feelings of the characters and the development of the conflict at the same time. However, such a manner of writing influences Meyers’ development of the theme only in a positive way. Monster writing style attracts the attention of the reader due to the contrasting mix of such strategies as controlled development of thoughts and stream of consciousness, which create unique tone and mood in the story. The style chosen by the author of this story takes several pages to get used to. Such a decision to present the story from one person’s point of view, divide characters into good and bad ones, appeal to the facts from one diary only, and use not a standard form of narration is unique indeed. Steve Harmon is the writer, director, and main character of Monster. |
